New Grants for Georgian Nature

New Grants to Support Georgian Nature

Dear Friend,

CNF has signed two grants, totaling €580,000, in support of Georgia’s amazing nature.

grant-signing-2013In 2010 Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park (BKNP) was the first recipient of a CNF grant. Now, three years later, we are happy to renew our support for Georgia’s flagship park! CNF has awarded BKNP € 340,000 in new funding over three years. Lying at the heart of the Lesser Caucasus, BKNP’s 85,047 hectares include virgin forests, 170 kilometers of trails, peaks reaching 2,600 meters and wonderful diversity from endemic red dear to butterflies.

Mtirala National Park is new for CNF. Situated in the western Lesser Caucasus between the Black Sea and the Adjara Mountain Range, this park highlights the amazing variety of climates in the Caucasus. Mtirala’s 15,800 hectares see annual rainfall of 2,000 mm and more, and its sub-tropical humidity is in stark contrast to semi-desert regions only a few hundred kilometres away. The park is known for its unique plants and abundant bird life. CNF has awarded Mtirala a three year € 240,000 grant.

As with all our grants, funds for BKNP and Mtirala will support operating costs including essentials such as infrastructure maintenance, equipment needs and salary supplements for more than 80 rangers and staff members in the two parks. In BKNP, funds will be also be used to launch a pilot biodiversity monitoring system which we expect to become a model for the region. In Mtirala, we will also build a bird observation tower.

Out grants safeguard these fragile habitats and the endangered animals and plants within them for future generations. The benefits also extend to the local people, who stand to gain from sustainable economic development around park lands.
